Theater Sonnevanck

Theater Sonnevanck makes professional music theatre for everyone from the age of 4. The youth theatre company was founded in 1990 by Flora Verbrugge. On January 1, 2021, she was succeeded as artistic director by Daniël van Klaveren. Sonnevanck is located in the centre of Enschede, the Netherlands.

Sonnevanck makes new music theatre, with solid content and adventurous in its form. We play more than 400 performances a year for more than 40,000 children, young people and adults. Sonnevanck won together with Toneelgroep Oostpool the ‘Gouden Krekel’ in 2016 and 2018, the highest price for a youth theatre performance in the Netherlands.

International ambition

When interesting international opportunities arise, we seize them. For example, in 2018 we co-produced a Kurdish remake of our performance Kereltje (4+) with Theatre Amed from Dyarbakir in Eastern Turkey, the hometown of director Celil Toksöz. We have maintained good collegial contacts with German music theatre companies, where theatre texts by Daniël van Klaveren and Flora Verbrugge are played a lot.
