Kwatta is a renowned professional theatre company from the Gelderland province in The Netherlands and is based in its own theatre space in the city of Nijmegen. Writer and director Josee Hussaarts is the artistic director of Kwatta.
Known for its sense of adventure as well as a sense of reality, Kwatta has been making inclusive and original youth theatre for the past two decades. Kwatta tours both The Netherlands and the rest of the world, performing for everyone -aged between 4 and 99- who is open to novel experiences,. Kwatta seeks to connect people and get them to think.
- Kwatta is an inclusive theatre group: a Kwatta performance can be challenging, but it’ll never exclude anyone from the experience
- Kwatta always seeks originality: nothing is ”childish” in the eyes of Kwatta. Nothing is a certainty either
- Kwatta wants to connect: Kwatta connects art forms, people, spaces and ideas
- Kwatta wants to make you think: every play is a chance to surprise our audience and to cause a sense of wonder
Despite the consequences of Covid, Kwatta still looks for opportunities to perform internationally, further building on a legacy that was cemented in countries like the United States, Canada, Egypt, the U.K., China or Taiwan. Internationally, Jabberbabble is still a big success and in high demand. As soon as it’s possible, we will look at touring possibilities. At the same time, Blote Konten (written by Jibbe Willems and directed by Josee Hussaarts, as is Jabberbabble) offers new potential to perform abroad. Much like Jabberbabble, it is written in a made up language – albeit resembling Dutch a bit more in this case.
During Covid, Kwatta launched a free web series called De Holle Bolle Worreld Rondo, which is a prequel of sorts of Jabberbabble.
Information shows 21/22
In 21/22, Kwatta will start the regional project Kantelvoort (including small performances in class rooms, workshops and a series of fictional media). Blote Konten will go on tour in the Fall of 2021, while another new show, Metamorfosen (for average sized venues), will go on tour in March/April/May of 2022. Furthermore, three new theater experiences (Zoek, Donderbuikjes and Even Niet) which were launched during the current season will remain available to stream at home throughout 21/22.
